Departing from Munich airport - how much time do I need?

I will have an 11:30am flight on Delta from Munich to Detroit. Is it reasonable to stay in the city center the night before and take the S-bahn at say 7:30 or 8am to the airport, or would you seasoned travelers recommend staying at an airport hotel instead of city center?

Thank you!

I would be comfortable taking the train from the city center. It’s just over a half hour ride. I would want to be at the airport by 8:30.

We had an early afternoon flight back to the US and chose to stay at the Hilton airport hotel. Great hotel experience - ! would do it again- and enjoyed a meal / beer at the airport Biergarten before departing. We were there end of July and it was very busy -so wanted to play it safe - it took several hours to check in and go through long lines at security. If we had more time I would consider staying in the city center but we were arriving to Munich only the day before and knew we would have to explore the city another trip.

Thank you both for the answers. I have a city center hotel booked but maybe should reconsider. Or plan on getting up early! As long as the S-bahn is running, I guess I could hedge my bets by planning to arrive at the airport with extra time before the flight.

Have flown out of Munich many times and haven't yet needed to stay at an airport hotel. Arriving 3 hours before your flight should be safe. IF the Sbahns are still experiencing construction delays, consider using the Lufthansa Express Bus. You don't need to be flying Lufthansa to use the bus.

We have stayed at the airport hilton many times. Great hotel and really allows you to relax completely. Breakfast is fantastic.

But, the train is short and not stressful at all.

I'm leaving at 12pm from Munich and staying in the city centre. With the frequent U-Bahn/S-bahn trains you shouldn't have any trouble/

Got that Detroit flight last month. We were able to get a Flixbus direct to the airport so went with an airport hotel. Given equivalent pricing I wouldn't mind staying in town as it would likely make for a more interesting evening than hanging around an airport hotel.

Thanks, Greg. I think I will stay in city center, and head to the airport early.

Thanks, everyone for your contributions!
