decent hotel near Munich train station

we are training from Salzburg to Munich, going on a tour the next day from the train station and then leaving the next morning via train. I've read it's not an ideal area, but the convenience for us is obvious. What are reasonably priced hotels--2 adults, 2 b/g teens. OK with 2 rooms, or quad if we can get an extra bed, so son doesn't have to sleep on the floor. Summer travel. Also, do we need AC for late June?

There is some sleaze in the area ( strip clubs, etc.) but it is not run down or seedy. We stayed our first night in Europe lSt September at Hotel Schiller 5, and were very pleased. A half block from the station (mostly by underground passage if you wish) and very modern and friendly.

We had a rooftop studio with kitchen area and huge bathroom. Balconies on both sides, with views over the rooftops. I don't know if the sofa in the living area is a pull-out bed, but they will add extra bed for €25 pp.

My husband was VERY impressed and we would stay there again if flying into Munich.

I had three previous visits to Munich and the only place I like as well was Hotel Uhland, which is very nice and family-friendly ( quad rooms), but not nearly as close to the train station.

I for sure needed air conditioning in Munich on the one night I was there in August 2015. It's a roll of the dice north of the Alps. The extra cost per person will not be as bad for you; I was in a single room and was looking at perhaps doubling the price to get into a hotel with a/c. I knew from reviews that my hotel had fans, but unfortunately there were none left by the time I arrived (grrrr).

marc does not allow teens. Schilller is over 600 euros for 2 nights, as we need 2 rooms.

There's always Pension Locarno. It is a "sink in the room, toilet and shower down the hall" type of establishment. No A/C.

We stayed 1.5 blocks from teh HBH in Hostel 4You. It was quite pleasant. Like most hostels, it has many private rooms, and may have a 4 person room. The hostel often has many young persons, and your young persons could go hang out with them. The cost was quite reasonable. With teens, I would go to a lot of hostels. They are reasonable, and have a young, exciting vibe. We stayed in hostels in Leipzig and Munich. We saved significant money, and as we are in our 60s, mingling with young people is fun. For your family, hostels will give your kids the opportunity to meet European kids. We also like them because we are cheap. We'd rather spend money on food than sleeping.

If you are coming from Salzburg your first stop in Munich will be the East (Ost) Train Station which is a mich nicer area compared to the Main Station.

I always recommend Motel One Ost in this area. It’s a good value for money German hotel chain. No AC but I’ve never needed it there either. The hotel is less than 10 years old so it has a modern ventilation system that helps on warm days but more than likely it won’t be hot in June.

It’s quick and easy to get from the Ost station to the main station for your tour.

For late June it can be warm or a real baker, depending if a heat wave is happening or not. I don't need AC, certainly am not going to pay extra for it.

Have always had AC in Motel One. It is why I choose this chain when I go to Munich or Berlin. If there is one near their station, go for it.

quad if we can get an extra bed

I think you'll have to go for a hostel if you are looking for a quad. They are extremely uncommon in hotels in Germany.

so son doesn't have to sleep on the floor.

Of course you can sneak in more people than you have beds for, but be aware that it's usually illegal to have more persons stay overnight than you have booked.

do we need AC for late June?

June in Germany can be anything from a late cold spell to a heat wave, and there's always a chance of rain. In Munich, it's more likely to be hot, but there's no saying for sure.

Alternatives to AC: Try to get a room not facing south, and open the windows wide early in the morning and late at night. Keep them shut during the day.

We stayed in the Courtyard near the train station it was perfectly located and is very nice.

I stand corrected, Motel One does has AC. I always assumed the controls in the room were just for heat. I did have a top floor room once in the summer and the room was quite warm during the day but at night it was fine.

If you don’t want to stay near the East Station there is a Motel One near Sendlinger Tor as well.

we need to be near central station for tour the next AM and also to catch train the following day to Hamburg.
Also, do we need/want AC for 1st week of July? I assume yes, which limits options. I am thinking we might just have to break the banks and stay somewhere like the Courtyard for $330/night for 2 rooms.

I check Hotel/Hostel 4you - a quad room for 4 is €144. That's half of what your other quote is. I think you get a 10% reduction if you pay in advance.

thanks so much! I booked 2 rooms at Motel 1 at Ost train station area for 200 euros/night with breakfast. I would not have considered that area. Perfect--good price, easy connection, and better area. thanks, again. Elaine

@ elaine...did you look at Europäsischer Hof on Bayerstraße, ie just opposite of the Hbf. (main train station), don't know if it has AC. If you need to be near the train station, I would assume it is Munich Hbf.

When I am in Munich, as I will be in May, I stay in the Hbf area in a small hotel/Pension too using the newly refurbished, expanded under ground passage.

@ Elaine... I stay at Pension Locarno, a single (EZ), suits me just fine, great location, nice, simple, clean, and relatively cheap (normally) unless it's Oktoberfest or convention time. It takes a credit card too, if you want to choose that option.

Elaine,

I'm a bit late getting into the discussion but would have suggested Hotel Royal, which is within easy walking distance to the main station. The area outside the hotel is a bit "colourful" with adult clubs and so on, but the hotel is wonderful. They provide a good breakfast with a variety of items. They appear to have family rooms.

I don't think the hotel has A/C but they've always provided a fan when requested and that's worked well. I normally travel in September and it can be warm in the evenings.

I haven't stayed there for a few years but I'm assuming the quality is still the same.

Just a comment - in a city like Munich with fast and efficient public transportation, it is hardly necessary to sacrifice location for false convenience. Train stations areas are almost always the worst a city has to offer. Take a subway for 5 minutes and you are actually in a nice area. Seems like 5 minutes well spent to me.

thanks. Given the easy connections, I think that we will stay at Motel One Ost. This is a good area to stay?

I love the Motel One brand. The downside is that the rooms all have just one bed (often a double), no twin beds.
The area around the Main Station has a lot of choices and is safe. Take a look at Kings Hotel 1st class and Citadines. They are in an excellent location and you may be able to fit in one room.

Motel One Ost Is in the Haidhausen neighborhood. Good mix of cafes and quiet streets. I recommend Haidhauser Augustiner (Wörthstraße 34, 81667 München) for some good food and beer in a typical neighborhood restaurant.

Motel One Sendlinger is also a nice location closer to the city center and only one Ubahn stop from the main train station.

You can’t go wrong with either location.

thanks to all! We would have never considered the Ost location, but I see now that it will work well for us, and the nicer surroundings will be much better for our family with teens. Plus the hotels there are more reasonably priced. Elaine
