Hello, I just posted about a train itinerary from Lindau-Insel to Salzburg via Bregenz but my friend has suggested we take a taxi back to Passau once we are off the ship and take the train from Passau instead. This looks to be a lot faster with a 32 min transfer at Wels Hbf.
Of course if you want to get to Salzburg from Passau that is the best option. But you appear to be confused about geography, so first clear that up.
Ok. Confusion cleared up: There is a Lindau near Passau as well. That has nothing to do with Lindau-Insel, which is a station on an Island in lake Constance, about half way across Germany...
Taking a taxi to Passau, and the train from there is the best option.
However, as this train trip is in Austria book this with the Austrian Railways: www.oebb.at
However, there is no need to book this now.
Thank-you. Yes a bit of confusion there with the cruise company only referring to Lindau and not Lindau Pier, which is the accurate location.
Lindau Insel is ALL the way across Germany! It worries me that peole can travel half way around the world and not know where they are going.
Anyway, this must be the number one question asked by people (especially Americans) who leave the cruise at Passau, it's frequently asked on others forums as well, like Tripadvisor. If the cruise company doesn't have at least a transfer partner they can recommend it says something (negative) about their customer service, the demand ought to be enough for them to sell Salzburg transfer themselves! If they definately haven't provided transfer options then just google passau salzburg transfer to check (but ignore the Gastein taxi sponsored link which keeps appearing despite them not going to Passau and look out for low "from" prices around €40-60 which turn out to be per seat in an 8 seat vehicle!) . A private transfer will pick up from the ship and take you to the hotel , for the train you will have extra costs to and from the stations but it could still be cheaper.
DB is the wrong website because Passau is the border station and the train journey is entirely on the Austrian network. Look at www.oebb.at/en/ they will give all the journey options BUT if the connection form Wels to Salzburg is by a Westbahn (WB) train they won't sell a through tickets. At the moment (who knows tomorrow....) they are selling tickets using their regional train to Wels and then their fast RJ train to Salzburg for €9.90 plus €3 for a seat reservation on the RJ, that may be an hour slower than a transfer but it's a huge amount less, even with local taxis at each end.
And the only reason it is an hour slower than a car transfer is because of the unusually long connection in Wels. But I guess they had to make a choice there, and choose to give good connections direction Vienna, and not direction Salzburg. May improve once they have enough trains to run the RJX to Salzburg every half hour...
