DB Pass Salzburg to Passau question

My daughter is in Salzburg and is headed to Passau in a few days. She has a DB Pass good in Germany and to Salzburg. If she’s traveling from Salzburg to Passau with a change of trains in Wels or Linz is her Pass good or does she need to purchase a ticket? I’m confused because her departure city and arrival city are covered with Pass, but the connection makes me think she will need a ticket?? Thanks!

That connection is entirely in Austria, so she needs an ÖBB ticket. Salzburg is covered by the pass only because the station was established as the common border station between the (then) Bavarian and Austrian railway systems back in 1851. Passau is in Germany anyway.

Your daughter could, of course, choose a connection within Bavaria (via Mühldorf), but that would take way longer (almost 4 hours compared to approx. 2:30 via Linz).

Thank you...I assumed that was the answer, but I wanted to check! I will let her know.
