My husband and I are visiting Würzburg for 3 days this June. We are arriving from St. Goar on a Tuesday and leaving to head to the airport Friday morning. We are traveling via train. I had ideas for day trips but wasn't sure. We were planning on staying in Würzburg Tuesday and exploring. Wednesday I was thinking about visiting Nuremberg and Thursday I thought we would go to Bamberg. Do both of these destinations require a full day or are there other places to visit on each of these days? Are these the best places to visit from a Würzburg base? We enjoy history, castles, good food, wine and beer. Thanks for any suggestions!
Personally I like Bamberg more than Nürnberg, but both are certainly worth a full day. You could also have a lazy day at Ochsenfurt, only 15 mins by train from Würzburg.
In Würzburg the baroque pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung is worth a visit, if only for the path leading up to it, flanked by the stations of the cross. You'll find it south of the fortress on the Nikolausstrasse.
Bamberg and Nürnberg would both (either) be great day trips.
As already mentioned there are some smaller towns that could give you a bit of variety if you wish to hop around a bit.
Ochsenfurt & nearby Marktbreit
The summer palace and garden at Veitshöchheim (only 6 minutes by train).
Iphofen, perhaps combined with Bad Windsheim and its open air museum.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
It depends on whether you wish to focus on mid-sized towns or would want to mix-in a day to visit some smaller places. You are visiting one of my favorite areas in Germany. I hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.
Rothenberg and Heidelberg are both doable as day trips. If you've not been to Wurzburg, you can easily spend two days there and just do one day trip. Another factor to consider is what time you will arrive on Tuesday and if that will give you most of the day or just a few hours.
Heidelberg has an interesting Renaissance castle, but could otherwise not live up to your expectations. Bamberg and Nürnberg have much more on offer and are only 1 hr away instead of over 2 hrs for Heidelberg.
Rothenburg will be crammed with tourists. In my experience lesser known places (such as Ochsenfurt and Marktbreit) are much more rewarding.
Keep it inside Bavaria and you can use a Bayern Ticket for 31 EUR for each day trip. In fact, Wuerzburg-Bamberg and back is a Regio Franken-Thueringen Ticket for 26 EUR. Regional trains only and leave after 9 am. The Bayern Ticket will also be good for local transportation.

.. or half an hour by boat. Other nice little towns include Dettelbach, Volkach and Prichsenstadt
(upstream) and Karlstadt and Lohr (downstream). Also easily accessible by train are Bad Mergentheim and Weikersheim to the south.
