Day trips from Stuttgart and Konstanz

Myself and my son in his late 20`s, (an Automobile and watch enthusiast) will be visiting Stuttgart, Germany for 3 nights during the 3rd and 4th week of October this year. The trip is mainly centred around my sons interests. We will be staying for 3 nights in Stuttgart and will be visiting Mercedes and Porsche museums. We do have one free day (a Monday when museums are closed) and are planning to visit Bad Wimpfen as a day trip. This is my idea as I am interested in history, culture and architecture. We will visit the tourist Information centre first and then are planning to visit the Castle (Kaiseprfalz) and Altstadt. I am keen to know from experienced travellers on this forum whether there are any other attractions that we could visit while in that town.
As I am unsure whether there are enough attractions that will keep us occupied for most of the day in Bad Wimfen, I am toying the idea of stopping at Ludwigsburg on our way back to Stuttgart and visit the Palace. I would appreciate any advise whether it is appropriate to keep our visit to Bad Wimfen alone for the day and skip our plans of visiting Ludwigsburg Palace later in the day given the relatively short time we will have for the visit to the Palace. I do understand it is a fair walk from the Train station to Ludwigsburg Palace and it closes at 4 PM.

While in Konstanz, (4 nights) we will be visiting Rhine falls and the the watch museum (IWC Schaffhausen) at Schaffhausen.
On one of the other days, we are planning to visit Appenzell and take Wasserauen gondola Lift to Ebenalp. As we will be visiting during the last week of October, I am keen to know whether there is any more probability of encountering of fog and rain at the mountains during this time of the year compared to summer.
Thanks in advance for all your advice.

"Much closer to Stuttgart than Bad Wimpfen is a similarly historic town of interest: Esslingen. Maybe it has what you are looking for."

Thanks for the suggestion. Esslingen appears to be a nice, picturesque town, much closer to Stuttgart with a shorter travel time. Certainly worth a visit for half a day. We could use the rest of the day to visit Ludwigsburg Palace.
