Day trips from Hiedelberg

Hi All,

We are a group of 3 Adults ( 1 senior citizen), and will be traveling from Boppard to Heidelberg on the 12th Aug 2017- Saturday. Will be in Heidelberg for 2 nights and will head back to Cologne on the 14th Aug -Monday.

Plan to use the weekend Schoenes Wochende ticket on Saturday to travel from Boppard to Heidelberg.
Should be in Heidelberg by 2 PM latest. Drop our bags in the hotel close to the Heidelberg HBf. And then go for the nearby areas trip.
Could you suggest us some places to visit during the weekend Sat and Sunday.
We would like to spend some time in Heidelberg as well, but not sure how long it will take to see the Heidelberg Area, like the castle, and the old town area.
But also want to use our transportation Travel tickets to the best use.
So possibly use the Sat weekend ticket to visit further away places from Heildelberg and Sunday see Heidelberg locally plus if we have additional time visit nearby places.

Which tickets will be of the best use during the trips you would recommend and for our return journey to Cologne we again plan to use the Quer Dursch Land ticket.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Here is one I was thinking of near Heidelberg, Dilsberg. It is a walled hilltop town near Neckar Gmund.
http://www.burgfeste-dilsberg.de/en/visitor-information/
It is a Preisstufe-3 ticket, which is 11.90 EUR for 3-person tageskarte from Heidelberg Hbf. Take the S-1 to Neckar Gmund then the 753 bus. Once an hour departures from Heidelberg Hbf at 5 before the hour on Sundays beginning at 8:55.

If anyone in your group is interested in cars, I would strongly recommend the Technology Museum at Sinsheim, which is on the S-Bahn network from Heidelburg. You want the Sinsheim Museum/Arena railway station.

Speyer (Romanesque Basilica) is 45 minutes by Sbahn 3.

Hirschhorn with its castle is 27 minutes by Sbahn 2. I drove the route years ago but believe the train ride is suppose to be scenic as well.

Thanks Gary, Philippines, Sam.

Will have a look at these options.
Which ticket will I need for the Hirschhorn and Speyer visits?

As I mentioned on the 12th Aug i.e. day of arrival in Heidelberg, I would wish to cover locations which are farther away, of course scenic places as I would have the weekend Schones Wochenende pass. And leave the local and close by areas for the next day.
Thanks once again..

Speyer, Heidelberg and Hirschhorn are all in the VFN System. They have a 3 person all day ticket (Tages-Karte 3 Personen) for 25.50 euros. If you look up the fare on DB Bahn (http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en) and click on "To Offer Selection", you will see the possibilities.

BTW Sinsheim is also covered on this ticket.

Hi,

If you are interested in seeing the museum on one of the great writers (Schiller of Goethe and Schiller fame) in German literature, it is in Marbach am Neckar. From Heidelberg take the train to Stuttgart Hbf, then change to the S-Bahn....very doable.

Thanks all, I am really looking to visit places with scenic routes and nature / scenic places to see.
Not much of a museum person.
