Day trips from Duisburg?

We are in the town of Moers (near Duisburg), visiting friends. We were supposed to visit their parents next week but plans have changed due to circumstances beyond anyone's control. So....we have three free days next week before leaving for Paris on Th. I have a car already reserved because our friends thought it more convenient than train travel from Moers . They've suggested Venlo and/or Aachen. Any additional ideas? Castle Dyck? Monschau? I'm looking for 1-2 daytrips to easy-to-get-to places (with parking!) since driving isn't my first choice. I'm on a mother-daughter trip with my 22 year old, and we've been gone two weeks, already to Venice, Verona and Salzburg. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions. We ended up with late starts both days, so did short trips - one day we just drove through the small towns north and west of Duisburg, stopped in Xanten for lunch, crossed the river around Rees, etc. The next day we drove down to Schloss Dyck. A large, lovely garden surrounds the castle. Unfortunately, it was really warm and humid the day we visited, so we didn't spend as much time walking around as I would have liked. There were hardly any people, so we enjoyed the quiet. It's sort of an out-of-the way place, but I'd recommend it for a short excursion, especially during cooler weather (spring?).

Hi,

I've been to Duisburg a couple of times as day trips. The first time was in 1997 looking for a museum but when I finally got there it was closed for refurbishing, etc, went back two years to see that esoteric history museum/house, which unfortunately no longer exists.

Any specific interests you might have, especially in history. These museums are located in small towns very doable from Duisburg. I would suggest Wesel am Rhein as a day trip from Duisburg, a little over half an hour by train, assuming if you want to see a specialised history museum. I've been to Wesel twice, first to see this museum. The second time as a day trip to see the WW1 cemetery there.

Xanten is worth it, went there in 1987 as a day trip from Düsseldorf.
