Day trips from Berchtesgaden

Hello all-
This just got assigned to me and I haven't had any time to research it at all, but we are looking for day trips from Berchtesgaden. This trip will be in late September/early October. Chances are that we will be renting a car for travel. We have been to Oktoberfest in Munich before,so we don't want to do that again(had a great time ,but just want new experiences). Our group may vary in size from just me and my wife or to include our friends and their two children. We are pretty much interested in anything really. My wife likes to shop and I like the small quaint towns with history. A mix of the two would be awesome!. (We have been to Salzburg before, but wouldn't rule it out).

Thanks,
Dan

With a car it's fairly easy in about 30 minutes to reach Werfen, Austria - home of Hohenwerfen Castle / Falconry Exhibition, Eisreisenwelt (ice cave), and the Sound of Music Trail. Spectacular scenery along this part of the Salzach River.

for the views, and from Berchtesgaden possible as a half day if you need it to. https://www.rossfeldpanoramastrasse.de/en/

Bad Reichenhall is also a simple drive, has history going back to the Romans and a neat little centre , with some local shops. https://www.bad-reichenhall.de/en/Home

those two could be done as one full day, in that order, because there are some reasonable eateries in Bad Reichenhall for later on.

For a full day, Prien am Chiemsee (and maybe the island). Use the B305 road not the fast route.

and, possibly dependent on a vote(!) and definately if a wet day (but check opening hours) https://www.traumwerk.de/en/ is half an hour beyond Bad Reichenhall. That is Porsche as in Porsche......

To add to the list… Konigsee is a few minutes away, as is the Jennerbahn cable car, next to Konigssee. Loved the Rossfeld Panorama Road. There’s a Sommerrodelbahn above Berchtesgaden…

We love Berchtesgaden and the area and have stayed a total of 7 times. Don’t miss St. Sebastian’s church and setting in close by Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden.

I've seen Where Eagle Dare, and I wouldn't push Hohenwerfen based on that. I've been to Hohenwerfen. There is no cable car to it; the cable car is somewhere in Austria, miles away. But, Hohenwerfen is the castle in the background in Sound of Music, when she's teaching the children how to sing. I went there for that purpose.

Hohenwerfen was a short train ride from Salzburg, then a pleasant walk up the hill through town.

While opinions on it may differ, I would think Hallstatt could be a day trip. Probably a 60-90
minute drive. In late Sept/early Oct, the crowds may be a bit more tolerable.

Eisenhower painted it as he passed through the area at the end of WWII.

Nearby is the Zauberwald (magic/enchanted forest), which offers a very easy, shaded hike along a river.
