day trip skiing from Munich

Our family of 5 is in Munich from December 30- January 3 and want to take a day trip skiing- is this possible? Can we take a train or do we need to rent a car?
Any advise is most welcome.

It's completely possible by train or car. In the winter the bayerische oberlandbahn (private train line) usually runs a train-lift pass combination ticket. By car the closest ski areas a less than an hour from the city.

The train at 7:13 will take you directly to the Hausberg ski lift in Garmisch. It's 45€ for the round-trip train ride and ski pass together. It's a great price because the ski pass alone is 41€. (http://zugspitze.de/de/winter/skigebiet/garmisch-classic/garmischer-ski-ticket)

The Skischule Garmisch-Partenkirchen has quality rentals that can (and should) be booked online ahead of time. (http://skischule-gap.de/en/ski-rentals.html) It is also located directly at the Hausberg lift. Lots of food options up on the mountain at the Garmisch-Classic area. If you want to go a little higher, the Zugspitze ski area is at the highest peak in Germany, but takes a little more time to get to. It's further up the line from the Hausberg.

We were in the Munich train station the day the after Christmas headed to Prague. More than a little surprised at the large number of people dressed in ski gear, some wearing boots, all hauling skis, getting on the trains. Don't know where they were going but it must have been reasonably choice given how they all were dressed. So there has to be some chose options.
