Day Trip: Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

How hard is it to get from Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber? Is this an easy day trip, or is it better to spend the time in Munich? We only have three days in Munich.

It's at least 2.5 hours one way (more when using slower regional trains between Munich and Nürnberg).

It’s an easy trip but there is quite a time on the train. If you want to use the Bavaria Ticket, go in Saturday or Sunday so you can leave before 9:00 am

"...is it better to spend the time in Munich? We only have three days in Munich."

If you aren't sure why you have booked 3 days in Munich, maybe you'd be better off somewhere else, either for the one day, or for the entire 3 days.

Besides 5-7 hours on the trains, you'll be using 2-4 different trains each direction to reach Rothenburg. From Munich it's possible to reach Augsburg, another Romantic Road town, on just one train in less than 1 hr. Or stay on that train to Donauwörth (another RR town, 1 hr. 20 minutes) and return to Munich, stopping in Augsburg on the way back.

There are other day trips from Munich using just one train you might like even better.

Munich > Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 1.3 hrs.
Munich > Prien, 1 hr. (tour Herrenchiemsee Palace)
Munich > Landshut, 45 min's.
Munich > Regensburg, 1.3 hrs. (A UNESCO World Heritage town)
Munich > Nuremberg, 1 hr. by high-speed train

oh that's a long way from Munich. Easier from Nuremberg. Even easier from Würzburg.

But as a day trip from Munich, eating up a third of your time in Munich, that's a really long day.

Are you using up another day going to Neuschwanstein or Salzburg?

What have you planned to see and do actually in Munich? Do you have enough time?
