Day trip from Regensburg

Hi,

We have 3 nights in Regensburg, which means 2 full days there. We might spend all 2 days there because we like exploring a place properly, but just in case we finish most things by the first day (and because we don't know when we'll get a chance to visit the region again), I thought I'd ask - what is a good day trip from Regensburg?

I've done a lot of searching on this website and others but haven't satisfied myself with what I've found. So far, I've narrowed it down to Nuremberg, Straubing, Landshut and Passau.

  • My understanding is that Nuremberg has good history and food, but
probably crowded in late May and has too much to see in a day.

  • Straubing and Landshut are closer to Regensburg, smaller and probably
have fewer foreign tourists (not a bad thing - though I say that
having no German fluency) but probably are places you visit only
after you've covered places like Nuremberg.

  • I understand Passau gets a lot of daytrippers (as does Regensburg) so might be crowded and might look quite similar to Regensburg. I was originally going to stop by Passau on the way from Salzburg to Regensburg, but it appears that the Bayern ticket doesn't cover it.

Am I right?

Advice welcome. Thanks in advance!

I have once taken a boat trip from Regensburg to the Walhalla, a nineteenth-century »Hall of Fame«. Very pleasant when it's not raining (as it did on my trip).

A nice trip is to Kloster Weltenburg. Go by train and / or bus to Kelheim, from there by boat through the Danube gorge
Weltenburg Abbey has a marvellous roccoco church build by the Asam brothers and a nice beer garden. The brewery is said to be the oldest monastery brewery worldwide.

With good weather I second a trip back and forth through the Danube Gorge from Kelheim to the Kloster Weltenburg. This would be more of an outing towards nature.

I prefer Landshutt over Straubing.

Thanks. I had originally planned a day to Weltenburg Abbey until I came across a slew of reviews saying that it was a tourist trap. Furthermore, I'd be the only one in our group that drinks beer, so it felt like it wasn't worth the trouble getting there as well as the opportunity cost of not being able to see other places e.g. Landshut/Nuremberg. Will rethink this but still keen to hear people's thoughts especially Nuremberg vs Landshut.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, but as a frequent visitor I can tell that's certainly nonsense. Prices in the Klosterschänke are admittedly a bit higher than in nearby Kelheim (after all, the inn-keeper pays a hefty rent to the convent) but by non means overexpensive (the menu list is online here). However, as with other popular places, it's advisable not to go there on weekends.

Nürnberg is, of course another fine day trip. For a possibly itinerary look up here (3rd posting).
I like Landshut too, but Nuremberg is seven times bigger and has much more to offer. I can't see any reason why it should be crowded in late May. Unlike Regensburg, tourist groups are barely noticeable.

None of these places will be "crowded" like a busy day at Disney World (or it's German tourist funhouse equivalent, Rothenburd ob der Tauber). You will see visitors in Nürnberg, but it's a fairly large city. The central Altstadt is quite large. The only time I've ever felt truly crowded was when I visited the Christkindlmarkt, and this only affected the market only. So, don't worry about crowding.

Another suggestion is Walhala, right outside of Regensburg. It's sort of like a Germanic Hall of Fame.

EDIT: Oops, others have mentioned Walhala.

We have not visited Straubing, going this spring.

The others would all make good day trips. I would prefer Landshut. It is a very attractive small town, about right for a day trip to my taste. There is a castle that you can walk to, a collection of some of the most attractive building facades that I have seen in Germany and very enjoyable views along the river.

Hi,

A good day trip from Regensburg: I suggest Kelheim and Ingolstadt, both logistically doable, I would not expect these places to be swamped with foreign tourists.
