We have time in our itinerary this May for one day trip from Munich by train: should we do Salzburg or Mittenwald? (I love the mountains and like the Sound of Music, too, so for me it's a hard choice.) Suggestions? Thanks.

Although on a clear day you can a great view of the Alps in the distance from Salzburg, the mountains are right at your doorstep in Mittenwald, and you can easily ride the cable car to the top of the Karwendelspitze.
Salzburg would be a better option if you don't get favorable weather, which is a distinct possibility in May.
