Day trip from Munich - Mittenwald or Garmisch?

We are planning for a day trip from Munich, where we can have a nice time with nature and may be some walk amidst beautiful scenery. We are considering Mittenwald and Garmisch. Which among these two we should pick? Also if there is any walking trail which you would recommend?

Last week we spent an afternoon in Mittenwald (and did only a "windshield" tour of GP.) The village is very attractive, tucked under spectacular mountains, with a nice pedestrian-only 3-block stretch in the center. We took the cable car up to the Karwendel peak. Big fun on a clear day. There are trails starting at the top; can't comment on them as we just took in the views from the area around the cable car station. (A trail sign indicated that the hike down to the base is 3.5 hours. With 70+ year old knees, we didn't consider that option but saw others doing so.) I'm sure others will comment in detail on GP.

You might also consider Partenkirchen which is a more traditional looking town and is adjacent to Garmisch.

Look at wingspreadtravel.com/leutaschklamm-gorge. This gorge hike looks relatively easy and was planned on our day in Mittenwald. But we had a rainstorm and did not get to experience this !

I'm not particularly fond of Garmisch-Partenkirchen - too big, more like a city, lacks charm. I found Mittenwald to be a much nicer, more intimate place. But you will almost certainly go through GaPa on your way to Mittenwald. You can always check it out first.

I made a day trip to Garmisch from Munich this summer. One day (half day actually) we visited Ettal, Linderhof castle and Oberammergau. Nature is stunning even around the highway (95 I think). Linderhof castle is even more romantic and interesting than Neuschwanstein (for me at least). Next day, another day trip, this time Garmisch-Partenkirchen and later Eibsee. Actually without side trip to Eibsee it could all have been done in one day since all 4 places are very near from one another. Both these trips were highlights of our 10 day stay in Munich. As for walking trails you can even see some in the map (3:39 min) in the short film below, which I made during these two days:
