I am NOT a wine fanatic. My wife likes a glass of sweet white. We will be in Munich mid-September, with a free Monday. Any day trips we might take to sample some wine at possibly a vineyard?
The are a lot of vineyards around Wuerzburg, the home Frankenwein.
However, Würzburg is a two-hour train ride from Munich (one way), and even if booked in advance, the trip will cost around €140. If you do decide to make the trip, visit one of the large wineries, preferably the Juliusspital or the Bürgerspital. There you can taste wine in the historic winery, enjoy a proper meal, and take a few bottles home with you. Both are about 5-10 minutes from the train station. Wine in a vineyard proper is afaik served only in Würzburg's best wine-growing area, the Würzburger Stein, at the Gasthof Steinburg, but it is quite expensive and cannot be reached without a taxi. And you won't find sweet wine there, because taht is currently out of fashion.
What I would do: stay in Munich and visit the Pfälzer Weinstube in the Residenz, which is run by the Pfälzer Winzerverband (Palatinate Winegrowers' Association). There is an excellent selection of Palatinate wines of all flavors (also sweet ones) and decent food that is inexpensive by Munich standards. It's open every day all day from 11:00, and you can show up without reservation. You can also buy wine on site.
Second vote for Pfälzer Weinstube in Munich
Iphofen, 97346. Two hours and a little expensive too. Franken wine is generally not too sweet. Maybe a Bachus or a Kerner? A friend buys wine from Weingut Emmerich.
Thank you both! We will do that.
