I want to verify that there does not seem to be train service to Ettal (from Munich). However, anyone aware of bus trips that include Ettal and Oberammergau?

There is a bus service between Oberammergau and Ettal. It shows on the train planner mentioned above.

As mentioned above, use the dbahn website to check for schedules. There is regular train service between Munich and O'gau (transfer in Murnau). In O'gau just catch the bus to Ettal.
