We will be visiting Hamburg in April of 2027. We have 4 days and would like one to be by train to the nearest popular/beautiful city with lots of history.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, Lubeck is a lovely town within an easy train ride (about 40 min) from Hamburg. As the former capital of the Hanseatic League it has a lot of history. It’s also a UNESCO world heritage site: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/272/. Enjoy!

I agree that Lübeck is probably the best option for this - there's so much history to be seen just wandering around.
Schwerin is also a really nice day trip if your idea of a beautiful city is one with a central scenic attraction - the castle and gardens are lovely to explore, and the lake view is spectacular on a sunny day.
(Other alternatives are Lüneburg and Bremen. Lüneburg certainly has history and attractive buildings - it's less spectacular than Lübeck, perhaps, but much easier to get an overview of. Bremen has a bit of everything, but the main square / Böttcherstraße / Schnoor combination gives you three lovely and distinctively varied sites close together in a way that's a little harder to achieve in Lübeck without a lot of walking.)

Another vote for Lübeck.
Very easy by train and then it’s a short walk into the historic centre. Streets and streets of beautiful old houses, amber for sale at street markets, lovely lovely place.

Helgoland is a fun trip, but it is a very long day from Hamburg, and it doesn't exactly meet the poster's request for a "popular/beautiful city by train". (It's also a journey prone to rough seas with the potential for being really unpleasant seasickness-wise.)
