We (two couples in our early 60s) are considering renting a car in Dachau and driving to Neuschwanstein as a day trip. We would appreciate recommendations on car rentals and where to stop between the two locations. We enjoy small towns with local flavor to enjoy the culture. This is our first trip to Germany. By the way, we are leaving in two weeks!!
I always recommend Sixt for car rentals in Germany.
There are plenty of nice towns to stop along the way but one place I usually recommend is a stop at the Wieskirche. If the weather is nice you can have a picnic there on a bench on one of the nearby farm paths.

Your best bet for car rental information in Germany is http://www.gemut.com/ . They have a toll free number and are very knowledgeable.
Are you getting the car right after a visit to Concentration Camp or are you intending to be in a hotel somewhere in Dachau?
We are staying at Hotel Central Dachau. We are renting a car for one day only as a day trip to the Castle. If I can find a car rental in Dachau I would prefer that. Thanks
When we did a tour from Munich they took us to Linderhof, one of Ludwig's other palaces, and also to Oberammergau, home of the famous passion play, a village that is very what you'd imagine it to be like if your first impressions of Bavaria were picked up at theme parks.
They're close to each other, not technically on the way i suppose but not much of a detour off one of the main routes from Munich.
