Day trip from Bonn

We have 2 full days in Bonn to visit family on a longer summer trip to Europe. We’d like to spend one drive on the Mosel (with a car.) As much as we love Burg Eltz, we’d like to try something different. Suggestions?

It can be quite time consuming to drive along the Mosel with the windy river roads and local traffic in summer, so you should probably target specic places according to your interests.

Some places of general interest include Bernkastel (probably the most stunning half-timbered buildings on the Mosel) as well as Cochem and Beilstein.

Bernkastel's Landshut Castle houses a restaurant now - never been myself but heard good things on this forum about it. Photo of castle and town:

Reichsburg Castle does have an interesting tour you can take despite the snub Rick Steves gives it, and the views from the castle grounds across the town of Cochem and the river valley are awesome. There's a cafe/bar w/ terrace just outside the entrance as well:

I've done a fair amount of hiking upstream from Cochem in the Bullay/Zell area, a nice place for that. The Prinzenkopf tower here is a goal for some:

That's Bullay on the right with Alf on the left - a ferry crossing connects them.

Others head to Burg Arras castle (hotel w/ small museum) which is a littel ways outside Alf.

There are of course lots of places for a Weinprobe or two, but keep in mind you'll be driving...
