We will be in Munich next Summer and would like to do a day trip to Rothenburg. Can anyone recommend a tour company or guide to do this? We will not have a car. Will by myself, husband and our teenage daughter.
Take the train. Plan on a train ride of 3-4 hours each way. It's a very distant day trip objective, too far away IMO. Even if you had a car, or someone to drive you there, you'll be spending like 6 hours round trip. Maybe you should pick a different destination for your day trip. Salzburg, Mittenwald, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Landshut, Augsburg, Füssen, and Landsberg am Lech are all much closer and more doable as day trips than Rothenburg since they'll keep your round-trip transport time closer to 3-4 hours in most cases. Landsberg, Landshut and Augsburg will require only about 1.5 - 2 hours round trip.
Thank you for your response! My husband went to Rothenburg as a child so that is why we specifically want to go there. I am hoping to find a tour (small group or even private) to take us there and maybe even stop somewhere else along the way?
If you think 6-8 hours is a good idea and you'll have time to really see both Rothenburg and something else interesting, well, the train trip to Rothenburg requires a change of train in Nuremberg, one of Germany's most interesting places... Get off there and get back on a train to Rothenburg later.
But I still say think this is a bad idea. If Rothenburg/Nuremberg matter, stay in that area.
This is not my recommendation but it is available: https://www.viator.com/Rothenburg/d36690-ttd
A Bayern Ticket will cover 3 persons for €42 round-trip on the regional trains; buy it at the station:
