I don't see why not. The driving time estimate is only 2 hours one way. Look on viamichelin.com or get the app to see distances, routes, driving times, tolls and fuel costs. Someone like Else on the forum might have comments about traffic congestion on certain autobahns but you have choices of routes you can take.

Make use of the Konus Karte that you get for staying in Baden-Baden for free rail and bus travel in the Black Forest and take the train (Schwarzwaldbahn) down to Triberg. There's one leaving Baden-Baden every hour (at half past). It takes a little over an hour. You'll get to ride along the edge of the scenic Gutach river valley. It's much better by train than trying to watch the scenery and the road from a car. From Triberg, there is an hourly direct bus to Furtwangen. That takes 23-27 minutes.

If you leave on the 9:30 train and spend an hour in Triberg, the total trip to Furtwangen is 2h50m, and doesn't cost you a thing.

I recommend train travel in the Black Forest and the KONUS card as well - however, while the card is available in around 130 Black Forest towns, it is NOT available to those staying in Baden-Baden.

Baden-Baden is not a "kids" sort of place IMO - it's about casinos and spa treatments and high-end shops - not very Black Foresty at all. It is also a very poor base town for train travelers - you have to catch a bus to the train station from town since the station is so far out. It's a shame IMO that it figures so prominently in Rick Steves' recommendations for the Black Forest - it should have an asterisk next to it or a disclaimer of some sort. I'd advise families to stay elsewhere as there are dozens of really nice places. I would look into Haslach, Gutach, Hausach, and Gengenbach as possible base towns. All of those are scenic, less developed towns with Black Forest character and are located right on the Black Forest railway, one of Germany's most scenic train routes, just like Triberg - so your outing is quite simple by train. All of these towns offer the KONUS card as well.

Good catch, Russ. I thought I remembered that Baden-Baden was not in the KONUS zone, but when I looked at the map, it really is. And I know I used the KONUS card to get to Baden-Baden a few years ago. So I thought is must be issued to people staying there.

I agree that staying somewhere else, like Gengenbach, or a plethora of other place that actually give the KONUS card is a better idea, but maybe she already has reservations. In that case is the Baden-Württemburg-Ticket a viable alternative. The Bahn page says it is valid for "most" bus lines in Baden-Württemburg, but is the one for Triberg to Furtwangen included?

Update: I looks like the trip from Triberg to Furtwangen is within the Verkehrverbund (transit district) Schwarzwald-Baar (VSB). According to their website, the Baden-Württemburg ticket is valid there for all transit of the VV.
