The water level on the Danube between and Passau and Regensberg is too low for river cruise ships. Travelers will have to leave their ship and be put on a bus to go around the low water area put on a different sip on the other side.
Same thing happened to us on our 2015 cruise. Had to take a bus and change boats that had a different crew. Never got used to the new crew. I’m actually surprised it took this long before the water got too low.
It happens basically every year now, usually always on the Danube, often on the Rhine. I think if you are going to be taking river cruises, you just need to figure it will happen.
What about in July?
Geovagriffin. My wife and her sister traveled Viking from Amsterdam to Budapest in July a few years ago with no low water problem. They had to close the top deck a few times to get under bridges. You were stationed in Germany. You know how variable the weather can be. Plus, it seems to be getting worse.
We are traveling the Rhine with Viking from Basel to Amsterdam this November-December after a bit of a train trip. I have been watching the rain fall and now thinking about a possible rail strike. At least Viking will rent buses where the river isn't passable.
Will Storm Ciaran make it this far and help fill the river?
