if you are anywhere in the downtown Munich area (near the Hbf, Marienplatz, Isartor), take one of the S2 S-Bahn (destination Petershausen) to the Dachau Bahnhof, then the #726 bus to the Memorial.

We took the S-Bahn from Munich and then the bus, as Lee mentions. It was easy to do with no delays along the way.
