Dachau Concentration Camp and then what?

I am looking for something we can do after visiting the concentration camp at Dachau. Specifically, something not in Munich, but not so far away that we cannot return to Munich to spend the night.

Are there towns or things to do north of Munich that are recommended? We will not have a rental car and hope to be there in August.

When I visited Dachau, all my friend and I wanted to do was just sit and stay quiet for awhile. I am not sure that I would have been up for more sightseeing. So we headed back to Munich, ate dinner at an outdoor cafe, talked and people watched and that was enough for us.

If you really want to go someplace, Freising is not far away - you could head there and tour the town; maybe have dinner and then go back to Munich. But I wouldn't make any hard and fast plans until then, because you may change your mind.

Hello Mardee, I plan to go to Dachau in July before my RSE trip, and I also plan to have a quiet night after returning from the camp. I imagine it will be a lot to process. I appreciate hearing about your experience.

When we went, we did Dachau in the morning, then had lunch and that gave us time to process everything, then we went to the BMW museum.

Before the camps, Dachau was an artist colony/city. I believe there are some attractions in the city you can visit as well.

I was like Mardee, with no desire to sightsee after Dachau. It’s a sobering experience and a lot to process, but yet important to see. I would suggest any sightseeing be done prior to your time at the camp.

Go to Dachau in the morning before the tour busses start to arrive. Although I haven't visited the Nymphenburg Palace it may be a good option for the afternoon. It's not in central Munich and it looks compelling from the exterior. We drove by it on our way to Dachau and then on to Salzburg after the camp.

Nymphenburg Palace is worth visiting, we spent the better part of a day there once.

Dachau is "ok." If you read up on the history of the place prior to going, you can meander around and skip the "museum" which doesn't have many artifacts at all (its mostly boards discussing what was once there and the history of the place) - I really thought they would have more objects, some of the museums here in Los Angeles have more artifacts from the era. The outside part where the barracks used to be is interesting, along with the very depressing oven area. Go as early as possible to avoid the throngs of high schoolers being noisy for school trips. I'd say the most you honestly need to spend here is 90 minutes.

Nymphenburg is nice, you cannot take photos inside, but the outside is very expansive and they have several things to visit- so i'd recommend seeing that.

You can stay in Dachau and walk up to the small caste and stroll through the garden and sit down for a coffee or more.

If you want more of the same you go back to Munich and visit the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism.

Or you take the bus to Oberschleissheim.

The Castle Schleissheim and Gardens there are impressive.

Close to the castle is also the Aviation branch of Deutsches Museum.

From there also (very expensive) Zeppelin-flights starts once in a while.

The alternative for a hot summer afternoon would be the area of the Olympic rowing regatta track with a small swimming lake, beach volleyball courts, sometimes bungee jumping and of course the 2km long rowing track you might walk around and watch the boats. https://goo.gl/maps/q63ZRjgJVPUJpY7u6

Another alternative for a hot summer afternoon in Munich - the English Gardens....
