Customs in Munich Germany with Short Layover

Hello, we have a flight that goes from:
- Cedar Rapids, IA to
- Denver, CO to
- Munich, Germany to
- Florence Italy.

The three airlines are United, Lufthansa and Air Dolomiti. It's my understanding that we'll go through passport and customs in Munich.

When we land in Munich, we only have 1 hour and 10 minutes before catching our flight to Florence. I'm not sure, but I think Lufthansa flies in to Terminal 2 and Air Dolomiti flies out of Terminal 2, so hopefully we won't have a long walk through the airport? Any suggestions for getting through customs quickly? I have read something about a Fast Track at the central security checkpoint in Terminal 2, but I'm not sure if this will apply? Thanks for any ideas! I looked through previous forum questions on this topic, but nothing seemed recent.

If your luggage is checked through to Florence, you won't go through customs in Munich. You will go through customs in Florence where you will pick up your luggage.

You will, however, go through Immigration (Passport Control) in Munich. Terminal 2 in Munich consist of two buildings, the main (original) Terminal 2 building and the newer T2 Satellite. There is a short underground shuttle between the buildings.

Air Dolomiti does use Terminal 2, along with Lufthansa; it's a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa.

As long as both your arrival from Denver and your departure to Florence are in the same building, it should not be a problem. After having your Passport checked, you'll just go downstairs to an in-Schengen gate.

According to the Munich airport website, an 11:13 flight to Florence left from a Schengen gate in the main terminal today, but I'm unsure of the arrival gate for your Denver flight, and anyway, trans-Atlantic flights could arrive a little early or very late (I've been an hour late arriving in Germany three out of eleven trips).

It looks like it might be a tarmac arrival, in which case an hour and ten minutes might be pushing it, but there are more flights to Florence that day. If you can't make the ticketed flight, and it is all on the same ticket, the airline will be responsible for getting you onto the next available flight.

I had a very short connection in Munich (about 45 minutes) that I fretted about all the way across the Atlantic. Numerous people told me not to worry because Munich was great for short transfers. I transferred from United to Air Dolomiti in less than 15 minutes, including going through passport control. In fact , I had to sit and wait for boarding to start on my next flight.

Thank you for this feedback -- this forum is wonderful. I had read different things about where we'd go through customs, so thank you for that clarification. Also good to know about the quick processing through Immigration -- will definitely cut down on the worry factor!

As long as both your arrival from Denver and your departure to Florence are in the same building, it should not be a problem.

Star Alliance flights [Lufthansa, United] arrive and depart at Terminal 2 - and as stated above, there are T2 and a T2 Satellite, which are connected by a short underground train,

To get to you Florence flight, simply learn the departure gate number and then follow the signs to that gate - you will go through the immigration entry passport check somewhere along that path - no customs. 70 minutes is plenty of time. And is your flight from Denver on United, or is it a Lufthansa codeshare?

The flight from Denver to Munich is a UA flight code, but it says it is operated by Lufthansa. The flight from Munich to Florence also begins with a UA, but it is operated by Air Dolomiti. Many thanks!

In Florence the last time I landed there after changing planes in Munich; my suitcase was just waiting there on the carousel and I walked right out of the airport.
I’m trying to recall if any official checked it or not….I don’t think so though.
That was in 2022.
