Current restrictions in Germany

Hello,

I am interested to know what the restrictions are within Germany at the moment. We know some people stationed in Germany and I am wondering how their experience compares to ours. I had heard rumors that people may not be able to travel into different German states ( I think they are called states) right now? I may have that wrong. But just wondering what it looks like on the ground over there. We'd love to get to Bavaria at some point but that may be a long time away.

Thanks!

A friend of mine is stationed in Stuttgart. She arrived in August. Even though she had a negative COVID test, she still had a very strict quarantine for 2 weeks because she arrived from Texas (that's what she was told). Having been there for 2 months, she has been venturing out. I asked what mandates shes experienced and she mentioned having to wear a mask indoors but when outside, she can be mask free. Her experience might be different from others based on location.

Masks in stores/businesses, and restaurants when not seated. Abstand (distance) 1.5 meters between tables and when standing in line etc. Sign in contact forms at cafe/resturants etc. with time and table. Small stores limit the number of people in at a time. I stood outside the Metzger (Butcher) for 20 minutes Friday with 7 people in front of me. Hand disinfectent is almost everywhere. Family gatherings seem to be causing many new cases. Some individual school classes are quarantined. Talk about extending school Christmas vacation and shortening summer vacation. Discussions are ongoing for the return of stricter restrictions. People traveling from over 35 (per 100K population) infection areas cannot get hotel rooms in some regions. Cases are increasing... There are currently 6,099 active cases in Bavaria and 42,273 active cases throughout Germany. Travel to risk areas outside Germany identified by the Robert Koch-Institut at any specific period within 14 days prior to entry to Germany, are subject to a mandatory Covid-19 test (from 8 August 2020) and may be subject to quarantine under the specific quarantine ordinances issued by the competent federal state (Land). The US is on the risk list.

Thank you mchpp. That was really helpful. It looks like in the eyes of the German government that we are not in an increased risk area where we live in the UK. But when I look at the average temperatures for late October in Bavaria, it seems like it might be a frosty time to visit. Plus it doesn't help that it seems like restrictions can just pop up so we'd be taking a risk by planning to come. Any thoughts?

Keep an eye on the RKI Information on the designation of international risk areas (linked prior), generally published on Wednesdays for added or deleted risk area Countrys/regions. There have been additional reports though sometimes too. Today is another big meeting with Bundeskanzlerin Merkel and Ministers, so we could get new restriction information within Germany. Nürnberg just increased restrictions on parties, restaurants and Kindergartens. Cases are increasing. I can't tell you how they are screening people at Airports, ports etc. but I did look at the Frankfurt and Munich Airports links below. Hit and miss on the weather in Bavaria towards the end of October, generally 15C or cooler, with rainy days a few times a week. There has already been snow in higher elevations.

Well as of this morning in my little town of Weiden we have 73 new cases within the last 7 days breaking the limit of 50 new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants. We now have additional restrictions. The local Hockey Teams got the virus (15+) pushing Weiden over the limit. Masks now in the pedestrian zone and no outside alcohol sales. Only up to five people are allowed to stay together in a public space outside the immediate family. In private areas, only up to five people are allowed to meet outside the immediate family. For events in closed rooms the number of participants is limited to up to 25 persons, in the open air up to 50 persons.
Bavaria Prime Minister Söder is scheduled to speak at 2 pm today on what the Bavarian Cabinet has decided on for further measures in Bavaria. I think I would not travel to Bavaria at this time.

Thanks all for your helpful responses. I don't think we'll be going, especially since it looks like the UK will soon impose mandatory quarantine on those traveling in from Germany. I just love Bavaria so I was daring to dream!

Cheers.

Because the rate of infections has rapidly increased, the city of Frankfurt has instituted new regulations.
* Restaurants, cafes, bistros, and bars must close at 23:00 beginning Friday, 9 Oct. This will not affect theaters, movies, or private persons on the street.
* Restaurants, bars, cafes require contact details that they keep for 4 weeks. They are allowed to ask for ID to be sure the information is correct. Too many people were writing down false names, like Micky Mouse, Cinderella, etc.
* Sale of Alcohol from 23:00-06:00 is forbidden, beginning 19 Oct.
* Plastic, see-through chin masks (popular with servers) are not valid masks and will not be accepted as such.
* Masks will be required in the entire inner city area from the Wallanlage to the Sachsenhausen river bank, as well as popular shopping streets, Bergerstr., Zeil, Schweizerplatz, and the area around the Hauptbahnhof.
* Masks are required on all public transportation and at all stations including underground stations, bus and tram stops
* Alcohol consumption in most outdoor public areas will be forbidden.
* Important: At the Farmers Markets, no alcohol will be served for immediate consumption.
* Gatherings in private homes and spaces will be limited to persons from 2 households, maximum of 10 people.
* Private gatherings outside will be limited to 10 persons.
* Masks must be worn in Religious institutions, such as Churches, Mosques, Temples, Synagogues.
* Masks are required in all stores and on all forms of public transportation. Those who are not wearing a mask or who are not wearing it properly (nose not covered, for example) will be fined 60€.
* Those who work in daycares. kindergarten, or kitas, receive free testing every 2 weeks.

Landkreis Berchtesgadener Land goes on lockdown today at 2pm through 2 November. New corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 272.8, the highest in Germany. The contacts of the infected persons could no longer be traced there. People are only allowed to leave their own homes for good reasons. Schools, daycare centers, recreational facilities and restaurants must close, events are prohibited. Masks are compulsory in occupied public places between 6am and 11pm. The population density in Landkreis Berchtesgadener Land is relatively sparse and It is still unclear how the wave of infection happened. Leaving one's home is only permitted if there are good reasons. Good reasons include:
Professional activity
Medical care
Shopping (certain things) + visits to the hairdresser
Visits to life partners and relatives, among others
Accompanying persons in need of support and minors
Accompanying the dying as well as funerals in the immediate family circle
Sports or walking in the fresh air - but alone without forming groups
Supply of animals
Church Services are allowed

Starting Monday 2 November strict coronavirus restrictions return to Germany. We are basically back to how it was in April with the exception of schools and Kindergartens will remain open and church services allowed. Schools and stores will remain open with mask and distance restrictions. Restaurants closed except to-go and delivery. Hotels closed except for business and emergencies. Clubs, bars, cafes etc. closed. No fans at the remaining allowed sports events. Max 10 people from 2 households can be together. Traveling is to be kept to a minimum. You can go the hairdresser though! The government will review after 2 weeks and adjust. I understand starting 8 November anyone entering Germany from a RKI risk area must quarantine for 10 days. After 5 of the 10 days a coronavirus test can be taken and a negative result will end the quarantine.

I think it’s fair to say nobody wants these restrictions and overall understand the impacts. Most Germans got their summer vacation after the spring restrictions. Getting the virus somewhat under control again could allow for the Holiday Season to be somewhat normal too, at least for family and friends, winter vacations and sports (Piste). “The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few.” \V/,
