September and the first half of October is usually the sunniest part of the year in Germany. By mid month, skies are usually much more overcast and it rains more. September is also harvest festival time in Germany.

We took this cruise leaving October 21st from Amsterdam. There were some sunny days but mostly cloudy and some fog in the morning in many ports. Photos were hazy. We had rain some days and a even a little snow in Luxembourg. Had to layer up quite a bit and I had to buy warmer shoes. However, we had a great time and there were no crowds to deal with anywhere. I love Germany and would do the same trip but maybe earlier would be less weather to deal with.
