Crowds at non-Neuschwanstein castles and palaces

Reading about all the commotion, crowds and lines etc at Neuschwanstein makes it much less attractive as a place to visit for me personally. I'm wondering what crowds and lines often are at other interesting castles and palaces such as Schloss Hohenzollern, Ludwigsburg palace, Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof, or others throughout Germany.

I visited Hohenzollern last fall on one of the Royal Stroll days. Crowd was no problem

Hi,

It all depends where you go "throughout Germany" looking at Schlösser. At Schloss Hohenszollern I would bet you would see only a small group. That was my experience the last time in the summer of 2009.

Which other Schlösser? Neues Palais in Potsdam, Charlottenburg in Berlin, Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel, Sans Soucci in Potsdam...more of a crowd can be expected there. Köpenick in Berlin...not so.

Keep in mind that there are Schlösser where the visitors are basically, exclusively German, ie international and American tourists don't go there.

Along the middle Rhine in mid-June of this year, there were zero crowds. I saw maybe a dozen other people in Rheinfels. The Würzburg Residence was also not crowded at all. What time of year are you planning on going? If summer, earlier is better.

Even though Herrenchiemsee is a Ludwig creation, the day we went in October there were a total of 5 people on the interior tour. Including myself and my wife!

Linderhof is less crowded than Neuschwanstein. Much more over the top interior also.

We skipped Neuschwanstein for the same reason. Plus I didn't feel it was very authentic considering how "recently" it was built and that it wasn't really used much before becoming public. Not sure if you'll be in the area but Burg Eltz was our favorite. I think RS strongly recommended it too.
