Cross Country / Nordic Ski Route in Germany or??

For the last year I have been fascinated with the idea of a cross country ski trip in Europe after reading this article online: https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2016/jan/16/rennsteig-crosscountry-skiing-trail-east-germany

In case the link does not work, the concept is a service moves your luggage from one hotel to another as you ski along a trail network during the day, arriving in time for warm showers and dinner at a small hotel. Does anyone have experience with a tour in the Thuringian mountains (mentioned in the article), or somewhere else in Europe that sounds like this? I've seen lots of posts for locations that are good bases of operations, but nothing like we are looking for. Thanks for any help that you have!

I don't know anything about these specifically, but this concept would probably only work in the Alps or in some of the central highland regions of Germany, particularly to the east. Most of the country simply isn't consistently cold enough to support large scale cross-country skiing. You would find more reliable conditions in Scandinavia.

I would have trouble Nordic skiing at altitude so would rule out the Alps for that reason.

The Nordic ski courses in the Alps are usually located at low altitude. There's a particularly large one I know of in Oberstdorf. However, this is just a circuit, not a course that winds through the countryside.
