Covid Testing for return flight to the US from Germany

I will be in the city of Cologne a few days prior to departing from Germany back to the US and therefore would like to do the required COVID testing at the airport in Cologne Bonn, pick up the results and then go to Frankfurt. Is this doable?

The test has to be no more than three days before your departure.

Why would you go all the way to the airport to do the test? As far as I understand, all you need to reentry the US is an antigen test (check to confirm, though); there are dozens of test centres that do this (and PCR tests) in Cologne and Bonn themselves. Here is one such list.

can't you also do this at most pharmacies? Or bring along the test that they watch you do on the internet.

I returned from Munich last week. There are pharmacies and testing centers on almost every corner there. Quick and easy antigen test. I signed up a couple of days before (although you could also walk-in) and had the results within 15 minutes later while still enjoying my coffee. No charge

That was on a Friday for a Sunday flight. It was simple -- and just to note: they did ask for the results both at the check-in desk and later at the "documentation check" Munich typically has for flights back to the US.

The test centres are everywhere, and while they will be scaling those back soon, it will still be very easy to find a testing centre in any city.

I will say that my understanding is you need to pay for a test (should be €35 for a rapid antigen test) and have your passport number written on the test result. This is a different form than the free test that was being offered (may no longer be offered, depending on incidence rate in your location). Just make sure you tell them you need it for a flight when you get the test.
