We will spending 2 nights in Munich before we fly home. I am looking for a smaller hotel that has convenient access to S-Bahn to get us to both airport and center city. I am hoping for a modest price range. Our trip is this summer, but hoping to book lodgings well before then. Thank you in advance!
Much closer to airport than city center, but right at the S1 station, Hotel Gastoff Maisberger. Large rooms in family run hotel with great restaurant. I did not mind the ride into Munich at all.
Without knowing what modest pricing means to you, I will throw out a couple of places that we have stayed and really liked. Hotel Lux is one, and the location is wonderful. Very short walk to the S-bahn. The hotel does not have a lift, but a rather grand spiral staircase which is beautiful and sort of makes you forget you are climbing;) They have excellent breakfasts made to order. The other is the Hotel am Viktualientmarkt which his larger, but again a fantastic location. We have stayed there a few times and like it. The rooms are a bit more sterile, and breakfast is just ok, but they have a lift and the staff is very helpful. Pricing for both of these is roughly $200 US dollars per night. This has been for December and September stays for us, and for triple or double rooms.
I stayed at Hotel Lux a few years ago while visiting the Xmas markets and unfortunately it was disappointing.
The spiral staircase was nice to look at but not when your room is on the 5th floor. I had a backpack so I didn't mind too much. Also, when breakfast is included with the room, I enjoyed the first mornings breakfast but missed out on the breakfast when departing. I had a early departure and breakfast began serving at 8am.
I am a fan of Motel One. Nice decor, good prices, they have AC that actually works and multiple locations.
lah--We were on the 4th floor and we each had a rolling bag and handbag. We didn't have any problems, but everyone is different of course.
The Notel Pne chains are hard to beat. Not very atmospheric but the bed and TV are fine and the bathroom though small is clean and functional. Highly recommended
We like Hotel Torbrau in Munich. It is near the Isartor S Bahn station and it is walkable to Marienplatz. We took the S Bahn from the airport to the hotel and you can also take the S bahn from the hotel to the train station if you go somewhere from Munich.
I am truly appreciating all these suggestions! Thanks to all who have already replied and who may still reply....how helpful these forums are!!!
I'd suggest any hotel near the S-Bahn line between Ostbahhof and Marienplatz. Easy access the city center ad easy access to the airport via the S8. My preference would be a Motel One in Haidhausen-Au (there is one near Ostbahhof and one near Rosenheimerplatz).

Last December we stayed at Hotel Metropol by Maier Privathotels right by the HBF station. We had been to Munich before, were stopping for three nights (Vienna-Munich-Paris) to do two day trips out of Munich.
I found it convenient, clean, professional staff and nice accommodations for the price. They had a small hotel bar and offered what looked like a great breakfast (but we passed as had early trains each day). I would stay again.
We also stayed in Munich for 2 nights before flying home from MUC last summer. Stayed at Hotel Deutsche Eiche, which was recommended by posters on this forum. The location was convenient for using public transportation, and for walking right out the door to many sightseeing possibilities. We really enjoyed the restaurant on the 1st floor for dinner & beer, and there is a lovely rooftop bar as well. Rooms were very clean, modern, and just the right size.
