Condor "small personal item" -- how strict?

Hi,

We are looking at flying Condor back home to the states. We plan to check our small suitcases, bring as large as possible of a "carry on" backpack (which is smaller than Delta's, etc.) We are trying to pack with small luggage that we can easily schlep around European trains, but in order to maximize our ability to pack what we want to, I am wondering how strict Condor is about the "small personal item".

I typically don't worry much about the carry on restrictions on US domestic airliners, such as Southwest, United, Delta, etc. but Condor has their "small personal item" sized at approximately 15" x 11" x 4", which is a medium-sized purse, not even the size of my backpack. I normally shove a small backpack (packed lightly) or medium-sized tote purse under the seat on other airlines... can I get away with something a bit larger for my "small personal item" on Condor?

I have never flown Condor but I wouldn't risk it. I checked their website and it says,

If the permitted allowance for carry-on is exceeded, excess baggage charges will be charged at check-in. Higher charges may apply at gate (zones 1-2: $85 / €75 / £65; zones 3-5: $110 / €100 / £85).

So if you feel like risking it, go ahead but understand that you might need to pay those excess baggage fees when they reject your bag.
