I will be renting a car at the Frankfurt Airport and returning it at the train station across from the cathedral in Koeln. Before anyone comments on this: I do realize these origination and drop-off points add to the cost of the rental and am willing to pay more for the convenience.
Someone was kind enough to write on this site (thank you Tim from New Jersey!) about the difficulty of returning a car to this particular location due to the parking lot for vehicles being in a different location from the rental counter inside the station (or at a nearby hotel). I also read comments on an Australian review site of AutoEurope that someone was unhappy with their experience returning a car, finally learning that he was supposed to leave the car at an unmarked parking lot that was full at the time, after some time and difficulty driving around the city center. I found these two comments after having read advice from Rick Steves in my travel book on Germany/Austria (or online, can't remember where) to have specific information about car rental drop offs when the destination is a train station as the car lot is often located away from the actual train station.
I have tried calling the direct number for Avis/Budget in Germany twice and gave up after being put on hold for more than 10 minutes each time after a recorded message asked me to wait and have called U.S. numbers of the rental companies hoping for some insight. I even contacted Gemut, a U. S. agency specializing in Germany/Austria I saw recommended on TA, hoping to reserve with them and thereby get expert information on that specific locale. However no one has been able to help.
We are returning the vehicle on a Sunday and I dread driving around the city center in circles trying to figure out where to drop the car off. I have spent hours trying my best to research this but must now rely upon the kindness of strangers. Can anyone shed light on this, such as suggesting a rental agency that has the easiest return process at the Koeln Hauptbanhof? Thank you so much for any help.
