Cologne park &ride

I'm going to be driving from Aachen to Fritzlar via A4/A40 in early June, and I'm thinking about spending a couple of hours visiting the Cologne cathedral en route. There will be two of us travelling, arriving at about 09h30.

Would the best plan be to use the Park&Ride Weiden West and buy a 4erTicket? If so, I have a few questions that the KVB website seems a little ambiguous about:

Are parking places bookable? (I assume not)

We'd be buying the 4er ticket on the day. How do we make the free parking thing work? I see from streetview that there are ticket machines in the car park.

To use one ticket for 2 people on the train do we just stick the ticket in the validation machine twice each journey?

Also, I assume that given time constraints that the S-Bahn is a better option than the tram.

Not a deeper insider of Cologne but some best guesses from "typical" in Germany.

Q1: I guess no.

Q2: Seems it is free parking, so just use it and buy a ticket for public transport (recommended is fare / regio level 1b).

Q3: Yes. If you buy a paper ticket you need to validate twice (one per person) before using transport one-way.

Q4: Normally S-Bahn covers a wider range between two stops, so it shall be faster. Check KVB journey planner for best connection.

Have a good journey and please give a short report after journey here to help others.
