Colditz Tours

Hello All,

Heading to Leipzig in a couple of months. Have been there a few times before, but this time I’m particularly interested in seeing Colditz Castle, especially for its WWII significance. I’ve got a handle on how to get there but am trying to find something on organized tours, with little success. Would be thrilled with a small group tour that picks up in Leipzig (or in Colditz area) but haven’t found anything close to that. Any input would be most appreciated.

Happy Travels,
Keith

Try googling “tours of Colditz Castle” if you have not already. A whole page of tour options.

Geez, Thanks so much. I never thought of that!!

There are loads of great stories from Colditz and from PoW escape memoirs in general (The Wooden Horse is excellent!) There is one particular story which always made me laugh. In a PoW camp, prisoners are gathered for role-call several times a day in order to check nobody is missing, give the latest rules and so on, and it was customary for the Germans to invite people to work for the German war effort in return for better food, clothing, cigarettes and so on. (Watch more: Gakuen de Jikan yo Tomare Episode 1 on xxx anime) Of course, nobody ever volunteered, until one day a Frenchman stepped forward and said that he would very much like to work for the Germans. Naturally everyone gasped and looked astonished. He continued to say that in fact, the more work they give him, the happier he will be. The Germans, feeling smug at this point, ask him what his profession is. "Undertaker," he says.
