Cogwheel train from Garmisch or from Eibsee?

We will be staying in Garmisch and for the Zugspitze, I was planning to drive to Eibsee and take the cogwheel to the Zugspitzplatt, then cable car to the top, then cable car back to Eibsee. But I am hearing summer traffic between Garmisch and Eibsee can be awful.

Instead, we could walk to the Garmisch Zugspitzbahnhof and take the train all the way, but then can we still see the Eibsee area? I guess in that case we would take the cable car back to Eibsee, explore, and then get on train again from Eibsee back to Garmisch? So buy a round-trip ticket? I was thinking it's an awfully long time to spend on the train, but I guess that's better than sitting in traffic.

Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

According to Google Maps, the distance from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen station to the Eibsee station is 7 miles. At this time of day, very early morning, in Germany, it takes 17 minutes driving from GaP Hbf to Eibsee. According to the Bahn, the train takes 30 minutes. The train takes at most 13 minutes longer, maybe less. I'd take the train to Eibsee.

So why don’t you get this information from your hotel. No one has better information then first hand information. I just left Garmisch 3 days ago. Been up the mountain many times so we skipped it this time around.

I drove from Garmisch to Elbsee a couple of times when I was there in mid-July and didn't find the traffic bad. However, parking at Elbsee was crowded and remarkably expensive.

Another option for Zugspitze, since you have a car, is to take the Austrian gondola out of Ehrwald. Easy parking, almost no line for the gondola, and the Austrian side of the viewing platform is much less crowded (though you can easily walk to the German side, and that's where bratwurst-and-beer stands are). I think it's also slightly cheaper. It's a longer drive (around 30 minutes if memory serves), but I was glad I chose that route. Here's the website: https://www.zugspitze.at/en/.

Maybe they aren't staying at a hotel? Maybe they like to plan ahead?
