Munich, Salzburg, and Nuremberg. Will be hitting the Christmas markets, but really enjoy a latte. Suggestions for a good coffee shop in these three cities would be most appreciated. I will not consider Starbucks. Many, many thanks in advance.
Coffee Fellows is pretty consistently good. It has become a fairly big chain and might be as close to Starbucks without being a Starbucks. Instead, I suggest finding a place the roasts their own beans on-site. They seem to be pretty common. I've visited a number, but didn't track them and don't have any specific recommendations.
On the other hand, if you need a beer recommendation...
Not a chain (or have it to be?)
I like Cafe Luitpold in Munich.
I most definitely want an independent if possible. Rather give my cash to a small operation as opposed to support a corporation.
I drank my share of Coffee Fellows earlier this month, and I liked it better than Starbucks, but hey, everything tastes better in Europe. The best at-table cappuccino I had during my trip was at the Cafe Extrablatt at the Mainz markt. But Extrablatt is also a chain, so I'm probably not helping you much! Enjoy the coffee search!
My wife likes Coffee Fellows, a very good German chain, equal to any local shop. They also have decent hotels attached to some of the coffee shops. But in any of the cities, there are good local places. The only thing I would warn you about, is that in many places serving coffee and other breakfast fare, they may just have automatic coffee machines, press a button and get a cup. My wife needs oat, almond or coconut milk (soy in a pinch), and these places only have whatever is in the hopper, no custom made coffees. This is maybe more common in train stations, but also bakeries and other places where coffee is not their main product.
just have automatic coffee machines
Agree. Most of the bakeries and many restaurants have the automatics. Based upon your op I'm sure you spot them as soon as you step in the door.
One comment in support of Starbucks, MacDonalds et al, the free Wi-Fi can save the day...
Dallmayr is nice for coffee, pastry or lunch. They have lots of yummy goodies.
Yes, Dallmyer's is a very nice place to visit and look around. Just a short walk from the Marienplatz. We like the coffee, last week we actually brought back a large sealed bag of Dallmyer's coffee. Hard to find in the US.
Also, Bar Centrale is a little Italian espresso bar in Munich we quite liked.

Dallmyer's coffee. Hard to find in the US.
try Amazon. As for freshness. they probably have quicker product turnaround than the typical retail store.
I would just find them walking down the street. Look in the bakeries to see if they have a good coffee maker. Many of them do. Gelato places too. Even small places have nice, Italian coffee makers.
There will probably be a number in the markets themselves that are non-chain shops.
Going234, thanks for the idea of Amazon for Dallmayrs coffee. I found the exact same package, 500 grams, de-caffinated Prodomo ground coffee. It was $22.58 on Amazon, I paid 8.99 Euro ($10), in a Rewe grocery store in Mittenwald. We felt that cheese, meats, breads, coffee, beer, lots of things were all cheaper in Bavaria last week than they were in the US midwest.
The coffee is sold, not by Amazon, but by a third party vendor.
There a several different vendors selling this coffee. This may be the one you are referencing, "A 2 Z STORE".

" I will not consider Starbucks" Neither will I in Europe, it's totally off limits
In Austria and Germany I patronize a German chain, "Tchibo" when I want to drop in for a cup of coffee.
A lot of GREAT information here. Thanks to all who contributed so that my daughter and I will not be coffee deprived!
In Munich-Cafe Lehel was pretty good. They source their coffee from a regional roaster and have some of the best cakes I tasted. Kind of pricey but you pay for the vibe and location.
Salzburg-our hotel provided coffee but I went to the famous Cafe Tomeselli for coffee and kuchen and thought the coffee was quite nice. Definitely not an everyday stop but good for a break.
My husband and I also enjoyed breakfast with coffee at Cafe Tomaselli one relatively early Saturday morning last month.
Nuremburg and Salzburg, my wife and mine's favorite places!
In Nuremberg, we absolutely love this coffee shop right by the Hangman's Bridge and highly recommend it: Café Trödelmarkt
Also in Nuremberg we were fans of Der Beck (especially the location by the Weisser Turm), as well as Casa Pane (right around the corner from the Hauptmarkt). None of these serve Starbucks, and they all have wonderful breakfast pastries to go with the coffee selection.
In Salzburg, we hit this cafe daily: Cafe Würfelzucker It has an outside patio along the river with great views of the Salzach, and the various bridges and views towards the Mirabellgarten. Also in Salzburg, don't miss the Monkey Bar, a great stop in the late afternoon with great views of the Hohensalzburg and river offering excellent, nice-priced cocktails... if you are into that thing.
Enjoy your trip, we can't wait for ours next June!
I second the recommendation of Tchibo. There used to also be a sister chain, Eduscho. I haven't seen it for some time. Tchibo sells coffee beans / ground coffee, and will make you a coffee also on the spot. But the really odd thing about Tchibo is that they have weekly special buys like Aldi. So you might go in for a coffee and come out with a watch!
