Clearing Customs in BER airport

Hello,

Does anyone know how long it typically takes to clear customs at BER? I will be coming from the US with a connecting flight from LHR to BER, arriving around 3:35 PM in November. I am trying to decide if 1.5 hours is enough to make a 5:01 PM IC train to Dresden. I will only have carry-on luggage. Should I buy the train ticket now or wait until arrival? The next train after this is at 7:01 PM. I would prefer to not wait that long at the airport if I can make the earlier train. What happens if I buy the 5:01 train and I ended up taking the 7:01 train. Will I be charged for this ticket?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

That depends on the type of your ticket. With a full fare ("Flex Preis") ticket you can board any train, with an economy ("Sparpreis") ticket, which is train specific, your money is lost, just like with a flight.

Economy price tickets are typically bought well in advance to get the cheapest price, flex price tickets are always the same.

With hand luggage possible; with baggage collection maybe but I would not place a 100% bet you will make it.

Customs is just walking through the green area likely without a check - if you do not have something to declare.

As recommended: just buy a flex fare ticket for train.

I arrived at BER on Thursday from LHR. My flight was supposed to land at 2:45 but it landed at 3:30.

By the time I got to immigration, I was the only person on the line for non-EU passports. I only had carry on so I didn't have to stop at the baggage carousel. I was off the plane and on the escalator to the airport train station in less than 15 minutes.

However, that doesn't mean it will be like that when you arrive.

I also suggest taking the advice of others and buy a flex ticket.

Note that with a Flexpreis ticket you are not limited to taking direct train. Any logical routing (in other words, anything bahn.com turns up) is permitted, as long as you do not travel in a higher train category than you bought.
