Classical music venues in Dresden and Berlin

I will be in Dresden and Berlin next April, and I'm looking at programs for classical music on the dates I will be there. Sadly, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Berlin Philharmonic are not performing while I'm in those cities.

Has anyone been to the Semperoper in Dresden?

How about the Deutsche Oper Berlin?

If you have, I'd love to know your thoughts

And if anyone can suggest other venues or performing arts ensembles I should look into while I'm there, that would be great.

Thanks!

You might check the Konzerthausorchester Berlin's (Berlin Symphony Orchestra) concert schedule. We recently enjoyed a fabulous rendition of Beethoven's 9th by the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. The Konzerthaus is beautiful on the outside and inside. In the spirit of full disclosure, our upper balcony seats were rather uncomfortable.

If you happen to have a Berlin WelcomeCard, you can get a 25% discount on Konzerthaus tickets. Be sure to show your WelcomeCard at the Konzerthaus box office BEFORE you pay for your tickets. We did not remember the discount until after we bought our tickets. We went back to the box office but it was too late.

Lane,

I've seen the Berlin Philharmonic (or whoever) performing in the main plazas in the city. I remember it distinctly, as THIS is one of the songs they performed.

There are often some really good street bands playing classical music in the plaza near the Frauenkirche in Dresden.

Berlin's top orchestra are the Berliner Philharmoniker. You can find an overview of all eleven orchestras and choirs supported by the state of Berlin here. Both the Oper unter den Linden of Berlin and the Semperoper are first class. It may happen, however, that the Staatskapelle Dresden will be at the Salzburg Easter festival during your visit. Then there will still be performances in the Semperoper, but only those that allow a relatively small orchestra (early Mozart and the like).

BTW, you can get an impression of the performances of the Berlin Philharmonics here.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

sla019, I'm well aware that the Berlin Philharmonic is one of the top symphony orchestras in the world, but as I mentioned, they are not performing in Berlin while I am there. But I bought a ticket to hear Grigory Sokolov in recital at the Philharmonie.

I just bought a ticket for Platée by Jean Philippe Rameau at Dresden Semperoper. Thanks for confirming that this is a top-notch opera company. And I bought a ticket for Der Zwerg by Zemlinsky at Deutsche Oper Berlin. I'm excited to see and hear some opera that companies here in the USA never produce.

Staatsoper Unter den Linden is doing Prokofiev's Betrothal in a Monastery while I'm there, but tickets don't go on sale until November.

We attended a concert (wind quintet I believe) at the Dresden Semperoper; we bought the tickets through the Semperoper website. It was the first European opera house we visited, and were truly awed. Because we pack light, I admit I felt slightly underdressed in my athletic shoes, but hiking boots were the only other choice. But no one looked askance and we loved the concert.

padams, thanks for the dress-code information. As long as they don't expect coat and tie at any of these venues, I think I will be okay. I've previously attended concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Oslo Opera House, and the Stockholm Konserthuset, and most of the audience dressed similarly to what people wear to the symphony and opera here in Seattle.
