City Tour in Munich

We will be in Munich for the first time in June. We usually take a hop on/off bus tour the first day to see an overview of the city when we first arrive somewhere new and then go back and visit more extensively when we know what interests us on another day.

After reading Trip Advisor's reviews on the Hop On/Off Bus Tours of the city of Munich there are many reviews about dirty buses and headphones not working to hear in English vs. the German speaking tour guide. The reviews were not favorable.

Can anyone recommend a tour for an overview of the city of Munich?

Thank you in advance.

Since you have a bit of time, download the RS Audio Europe App and listen to his walking tour of Munich. You can use that to judge how much you need a hop on/hop off bus. Although there is LOTS to Munich, much of it is in the center where buses can't go, or they are specific individual destinations out from the center - Dachau, BMW Museum, etc.

Thank you so much for your reply. Great idea! We might be able to just take public transportation (bus) to the general area and then hop on/off from there as needed.

We are visiting Salzburg and Vienna as well and planned on taking walking tours for those cities as we heard that the city center didn't allow buses as well.

Thank you again.

There are very reasonably priced walking tours that are going to be far superior to that audio guide from Rick. First, how old is that walk he created? Does it allow for any changes in the city, tell you about how residents feel about events, show you the best places to hang out and have a bite to eat (cause new places open all the time)? An audio guide cannot answer any questions at all. Plus, I don't know how accurate his Munich walk is, but about 13 years ago, I found dozens and dozens of inaccuracies in the guidebook about Frankfurt.

Try Dark History or Radius Tours. Stay away from the "free" tours unless you want a scripted tour along with 40 new best friends.

@Ms. Jo
Thank you so much! Yes, I was looking at walking tours now after the first response. I do prefer interactive vs. audio tours. I can listen to Steve's tour prior to going for information and then take a walking tour once I am there. Thank you for the recommendations as well.

You can do a pretty good circular tour of Munich by public transport, using bus 100 from the Hauptbahnhof to the Ostbahnhof, and then a tram back to the Hauptbahnhof by a different route.

We did an evening beer tour we found on Viator, very interesting as we went to the Octoberfest museum, some old local pubs for samples, ended in a beer hall with a food sharing platter and more drinks, only six of us on the tour, very enjoyable

Keep in mind that Viator is reselling someone else's tour and charging them a 20-25% commission for doing so.
Always try to book directly with the company instead of with Viator or Trip Advisor, or Get Your Guide.

I’d echo Ms. Jo’s recommendation of radius tours. Our Rick Steves BOE14 day tour used Radius as the local guide in Munich and the tour was excellent. Our guide was the son of the tour company owner. Just enough information and orientation and it took only about 2-3 hours.
