Hi!
We are flying into Paris and out of Frankfurt at the beginning of December for Christmas markets!
The plan is to take a train from Paris to Strasbourg and then hop around the area before heading up to Heidelberg and then Frankfurt.
Should we plan on renting a car or would public transportation make more sense? We’re comfortable and have done both, but with trying to find parking both at hotels and markets, is that more hassle than it’s worth? Are trains frequent enough that we should be able to get around as we want?
Any experience or suggestions would be helpful!
Christmas markets tend to be in towns and cities, so trains and buses make a lot more sense.
I used trains to get from place to place for Christmas markets with the exception of in the Alsace when I took buses from Colmar to small villages. I was based in Strasbourg for that portion of the trip. If you think you’re going to be taking regional trains in Germany you might look into getting a Deutschland Ticket to see if it would save you money. There is a lot of information about the ticket in the forum.
I would use public transportation. You will pay a lot of money for parking and end up walking farther due to full parking garages, etc. I know in Frankfurt, the lines of cars trying to get into the garages sometimes wrap around the block. Plus, if you want to indulge in Glühwein, etc. you would not want to drive.
