Hello. Will be staying in GP from 12/26-1/1. I know there are a few Christmas markets still open in Munich, but wondering if markets in Salzburg, Innsbruck or near GP are open after Christmas. Thank you.
Ok, I give up. What’s GP?
Garmisch-Partenkirchen most likely.
Can't provide you any links in English but this piece in German names Berchtesgaden (#6) as a post-Christmas market as well as 9 additional options withing Bavaria's borders for Christmas activities (not all are full-fledged markets.) Ingolstadt's market (#7) might be an option within reasonable distance of Munich as well.
Salzburg's market is open through Dec 26.
We spent Christmas in Munich a couple of years ago and all of the Christmas markets were gone by Christmas eve. I was surprised how quickly they disappeared. They started closing down mid-afternoon on Christmas eve and total gone by 7,8 pm. Our experience with other German markets was the same. The markets in Prague were open through New Years.
From the dates posted, it looks like one of the markets in Innsbruck is open: https://www.tyrol.com/things-to-do/events/all-events/e-christmas-market-innsbruck. Read closely down the page for details.
Bolzano is also open: https://www.christmas-markets.it/en/christmas-market-bolzano-south-tyrol.aspx.
Innsbruck and Bolzano can be reached on a southbound train from GP. I recommend looking at other locations and markets in the Südtirol.
Almost all markets in German shut down between 22nd and 23rd, with a few cities going through the 24th afternoon. Exceptions are a few markets in Berlin and the others already named.
Prague would be a good place to go from Munich for open markets post-Christmas, as they are open normally from the 25th through the New Year. If that's not appealing, Alsace in France also has quite a few markets open through the same time period.
