Christmas Markets and Credit Cards

Good Morning

I will be traveling to Germany and France this year to visit a few Christmas Markets. I would appreciate some feedback regarding the use of credit cards at the markets. How "card friendly" are the markets or do most of them take cash only? If I were to purchase a more expensive item is the use of a credit card an option?

If it helps or if it matters, we are staying in Baden-Baden and visiting Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Colmar and Strasbourg.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

My wife and I visited Christmas markets in Berlin, Nuremburg, Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest & Prague in December 2022 and found credit/debit card use was widely accepted in all of the markets.

Hi!

Echoing ann.ken here: yes, most Christmas markets in most mid-to-large towns happily (or even exclusively) take credit cards. I always have a little cash on me anyway. Some vendors will tack up a discrete sign indicating that they’d love it if you paid cash. In those cases, I do pay cash if I have it. But for the most part you will not need it.

I go to the Christmas Markets every year. I would say that 50% of the huts take credit cards and 50% want cash. Food is always paid with cash. In Dresden and Erfurt the vendors would mostly take cash, but Munich had more vendors who would take cards. My daughter got so her first question was “Do you take credit cards?” and would move on if the answer was no. It doesn’t matter how expensive an item is either. There was a big nutcracker I wanted and my family had to pool our cash to be able to buy it. The bottom line is if you don’t have some cash (euros) you will be disappointed.
