My husband and I ( 60 years young) would like to go to Germany at the beginning of December. We would like to be in Germany for 2 weeks and stay in at least 3 city/villages for their Christmas Markets. I don’t want to rent a car but travel by train. Any suggestions? Also what would be a good airport to fly into and depart from. We would be flying out of Los Angeles.
Thank you.
Kim
I recommend flying in to Munich (MUC) and out of Hamburg (HAM) to taste the best of South, Berlin and Northern Germany markets.
- Here you can see a selection of Christmas Markets in Bavaria.
- Berlin has a lot of Christmas Markets of different tastes.
- In the North you could stay in Hamburg and do daytrips to Lübeck, Bremen-Schnoor and visit Hamburg's historical Christmas Market at beautiful city hall.
Best use journey planner of Deutsche Bahn for train travel.
For all local public transport the Deutschland Ticket is a good idea. Buy separate tickets for long-distance connections.
You need to make some decisions very quickly, as most of the hotels in cities with popular markets are already selling out. I would fly into either Paris or Frankfurt, and possibly fly out the other. I recommend these as there are direct flights from LAX to both.
Around Frankfurt you have a number of good markets, large to small. If you then go to Wurzburg you have Bamberg, Bayreuth, and Nuremburg all within a short riding distance (by train). You could easily then go to Heidelberg and from there do Speyer, Neustadt, Stuttgart and all the other markets in this area. And Paris gives you access to the markets there and other close destinations like Reims, and even some slightly further out, like Strasbourg.
