Christmas market trip Esslingen vs. Bad Wimpfen

this is not our first Christmas market trip and we've been to Germany 5 times previously, but not to either of these places.

Bad Wimpfen was put on my radar back in 2018 by a post from Nigel. I've been wanting to make it there since reading that post. Esslingen has come onto my radar while doing research for this trip. Pretty sure I would love the medieval market. One concern I have about bad wimpfen is lack of restaurants and worried there would not be enough to fill 2 days there.

We'll be coming from Heidelberg, then I had planned 2 nights in Bad Wimpfen Dec 6-8 as their Christmas market is weekends only. This will be followed by 2 nights in Rothenberg then 3 nights in Nuremberg with a day trip to Regensberg. We really prefer small villages to large cities.

I thought about staying in one and day tripping to the other, but the train is 90 minute minimum which is more than I'd like for a day trip.

Any advice?

The Esslingen markets are truly magical and absolute fun, with a stage for live entertainment, parades, street entertainers ( fire juggling, magic shows,), and an incredible hand-on kids area. We day tripped from Stuttgart, which doesn't get much attention, but also has great markets, at which the vendors all elaborately decorate the roofs of their stands.
I haven't been to Nigel's recommendation, but I do trust his favorites.
The Rothenburg markets are very small. I love that town, but don't come just for the markets. If you just want to be in the town, then enjoy.
Safe travels!

Thanks Pat. We've actually been to Rothenberg 3 times in summer and once in December for the Christmas Market. We Love Rothenberg!

If we do Esslingen I think we would probably stay in Esslingen and day trip to the markets in Stuttgart.
