Chiemsee Facist Murals

I was listening to Rick Steve's Munich and Bavaria and would like to know where the Facist Murals in Chiemsee Rest Stop are.

Do you mean the rest stop on A8? I've been there. It has an amazing view of Chiemsee, but the building itself is rather unremarkable and not very big. I don't remember seeing a mural anywhere, but of course, I wasn't looking.

Not everything painted in the nazi era is eo ipso nazi art. Those murals show every day's life in an late romantic idealized view (pretty kitschy from today's perspective), a style that you can find all over Europe in the first half of the 20nd century. The US army transfered two or three of them to the Garmisch AFRC when it abandoned the Chiemsee Rasthaus. The rest are not accessible to the public any more since the Rasthaus was sold five years ago to a private enterprise.

Thank you for your responses. I will be staying in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in May and will look for the murals while there.

I don't know how many date from the NS period, but Garmisch-Partenkirchen has no lack of murals! Certainly, the subject matter is mostly folk-inspired and nothing openly fascist.

But if that sort of thing interests you, here's two recommendations in GaP. The Olympic Stadium no longer features swastika or Reichsadler ornamentation, but the overall style of is unmistakably totalitarian.

Also, the hike up to St. Anton's pilgrimage church on the Partenkirchen side of town is worth the effort. The outer gallery of the church features memorials with photographs of all the local residents who died in the war. A few are SS officers and look suitably evil. But the majority just look like scared kids who would have rather stayed home. And check out the paintings inside the church. They show images of the town being divinely saved from the various invaders over the years- Hapsburgs, French, US... who incidentally, have never left since setting up camp in 1945.

Thanks again for the info. I will be traveling throughout Bavaria by car for a week and will definitely visit the places you have suggested.
