Cheapest Train Fare for Day Trips from Offenbach

I am hoping the experts on this forum can help me figure out the cheapest train fares for the following three day trips out of Offenbach (my wife's family lives there)

  1. Getting to and from the Rhine area. I was thinking of training to Koblenz and then taking a KD boat down the Rhine to Bingen or Rudesheim am Rhein. We would get off and on the boat to stop and visit the towns along the Rhine. And then at Bingen or Rudesheim am Rhein we would head back to Offenbach.

  2. Bonn

  3. Weissenohe to do the Fünf-Seidla-Steig. Yes I know this is a loooong day trip (I am debating spending the night in Nuremberg but just in case I don't I'd like to see what the cheapest cost is).

All trips would happen on a weekday in the 4th week of June or week at the end of June that runs into July.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Assuming this is for 2 adults.

  1. Instead of going all the way to Koblenz, suggest going to Boppard where it is only a 15 minute walk to the KD dock and the most scenic part of the Rhine begins going south. Koblenz Hbf is a long way to the water front for the KD boat. Buy an RMV Gruppentageskarte for 35 EUR. Take regional train to Frankfurt Hbf and change to a regional train to Mainz Hbf. At Mainz Hbf buy a 2 person Rheinland-Pfalz Ticket for 31 EUR. Take regional train to Boppard after 9 am weekdays, anytime weekends. Show your R-P ticket to get a discount on the K-D boat. When your boat arrives at Bingen, Use you R-P ticket to get to Mainz on a regional train, then to Offenbach with you RMV Gruppentageskarte.
That way you can start travel from Offenbach before 9 am weekdays, just don't leave Mainz before 9 am. If you can leave Offenbach after 9 am, you can use a Quer Durchs Land ticket for 52 EUR and use regional trains for the whole day.

  2. You can also use the Quer Durchs Land ticket to get to Bonn, or the same strategy to get to Bonn with an earlier start with an RMV ticket.

  3. You can use a similar strategy to get to Nuremberg. There is an 8:45 am regional train to Wuerzburg. Buy an RMV Gruppentageskarte for 16.70 EUR and a 2 person Bayern Ticket for 34 EUR. The RMV ticket is good to Kahl (Main) then the Bayern ticket is good for the rest of the trip. At Nuremberg Hbf, you will have to transfer on the U-Bahn to the Nordostbahhof to get the train to Weissinohe. The Bayern Ticket covers that as well. Having both tickets in hand means you do not have to get off the train at Kahl, you just change tickets.

Sam, thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. I am an experienced traveler and do use the DB website often but I did not know the regional ticket information that well.

I appreciate the help.

From Offenbach, take the S-bahn to the main train station and take the once an hour train to Rüdesheim. Get on your ship and ride it to St. Goar or Boppard. Take the train back. Don't use the ships like hoho buses, they don't run that frequently. Show your train ticket to get 20% off or if you are seniors, you get 30% off. This way you are riding the ship in the direction of the current.

Get an all-day group ticket with RMV from Offenbach to Rüdesheim for 45.50€. If you don't mind starting until after 9 or it is a weekend, buy a Hessen ticket instead for 36€. (valid for up to 5 people, all day, all regional trains) Get a Rheinland-Pfalz ticket to get back from St. Goar, etc. This costs 25€ plus 5€ for each extra person. Alternative to buying all these other tickets is the Quer Durch Deutschland ticket for 44 € plus 8 € for each additional person. This is valid all day on all regional trains, but 1st after 09:00 unless it is a weekend and then you can start as early as you like.

As Ms Jo indicates, "down", on the map is actually up the river, against a very strong current. Unless you really want to spend a lot of time on a boat, I, too, would suggest cruising down the river, ie, in the direction of Mainz to Koblenz (although start in Rüdesheim or Bingen, not Mainz).

Also, as she says, the river cruise is not well arranged for hop on/hop off. There are only 4 or 5 boats each way, all day. Unless you start very early, you'll only have one, maybe two opportunities for stopping off, and then for just an hour. Better to cruise right through, then come back on the train (perhaps the next day), stopping at towns you want to see.

I don't think K-D's 2020 schedule is out yet, but it will undoubtedly be similar to the 2019 schedule.

remember that you can put all those train tickets on the DB app so you don't need paper ones at all, and you can follow how late or on time your trains are, and what platforms you will use, including any late notice platform changes. You will need some data or wifi though.

Nigel, thanks for the idea. I actually didn't think of that. I checked the app and it said at this time the Hessen ticket is not yet available as a smartphone ticket but it all the rest are.
