We are supposed to leave Thanksgiving day for Germany to visit the Christkindl Markets flying into Munich. Munich was on our itinerary but has now been cancelled. We arrive Friday November 26 early and leave Wednesday Dec 1. We were traveling to Salzburg, Nuremberg and Munich. Any suggestions for itinerary? We are vaccinated and boostered and have a rental car.
Regensburg is our favorite combination of Christmas Market and Town. It is not far from either Salzburg or Nürnberg. It has a normal Christmas Market and a "Romantic" one on the grounds of the Thurn & Taxis Palace.

You have to pay to enter the one on the palace grounds which makes it less crowded than the pictures seem to indicate.
There is now a direct Regional Express train from the Airport to Regensburg. After a long flight I really appreciate the convenience.
ditto to the above post re: Regensburg - it has a fantastic free Xmas Market in town near the cathedral - plus, the Thurn and Taxis is one of the best markets we've ever been to. The town itself is totally worth it - I also highly recommend a walking tour of the town as there is SO much history there with the cathedral, another church that is the oldest in EU, and the oldest sausage shop//restaurant. It's totally worth a few days. WE also love the markets in Salzburg and Nuremberg. Munich's Xmas Market is one of our least favorites, so you really aren't missing anything by it being shut down. If you need a great hotel in Nuremberg, we love Hotel Victoria-- the location can't be beat, you can walk underground to the train station and it's a fast, gorgeous walk to the markets. You really don't need a car - parking in these towns is very difficult and they are all very convenient to the train station. We go over every other year and have NEVER needed a car.
Press conference on Friday concerning Regensburg Christkindlesmarkt am Neupfarrplatz and Lucrezia-Markt (Haidplatz). The original press conference was moved from yesterday to Friday. Thurn & Taxis is still scheduled (so far), but only 2G. Landshut has postponed the opening (pending). Moosburg, Rosenheim, Ingolstadt and Bad Füssingen have canceled. As of press conference on Monday, the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt will open, but be spread out and 2G in food areas.
Yeah, I think that it would be a very risky idea to plan travel around Weihnachtsmärkte this year. Things are changing very quickly here, and there will certainly be more restrictions introduced in coming days and weeks.
what is 2G?
what is 2G?
from the initial letter in German of fully vaccinated or recovered from the virus. ONLY.
2 G - Geimpft or Genesen / Vaccinated or Recovered.
3 G - Geimpft, Genesen, Getestet / Vaccinated, Recovered, or Tested
All of the Christmas markets mentioned in this thread have been cancelled:

There are other parts of Germany that have not cancelled the christmas markets yet, but hard to say what they will do.
Yes unfortunately we had to cancel our trip. Hoping for 2022 ❤️
Well you could make some Glühwein at home, maybe some Lebkuchen? A Bratwurst on a roll with mustard or a spiced fired pork shoulder stuck sandwitch? Have some candied almonds. Roasted Chestnuts are nice. If you're in a northern climate outside with a fire? Decorate outside with lights, white is the German standard. Dress Bavarian. Play some Christkind Musik music or Blasmusik. Have some friends over. Sorry you had to cancel. We're all living through this...
