Celebrating Birthday in Munich!

Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I will be arriving in Munich the morning of his 27th birthday (June 11th)! We've never been to Munich and will be staying near city center.

Do you have any recommendations for how to spend the day? I would also love to treat him to a traditional Bavarian meal. Do you have any restaurants that fit the bill? Dinner budget will be around $100 for the both of us that night.

We'll be arriving around 6am on the 11th and staying through the night of the 13th. I just want to make sure the day is special. :) This is my first time posting, so let me know if I left any important information out. Thank you in advance!

Depends on if you want something loud and fun or quieter. For the former, of coursr, the famous Hofbrauhaus, or any of the beer gardens. I think the best is the Augustiner, but it's a bit of a walk from the city center, in an unlikely neighborhood beyond the Hauptbahnhof. Either of the gardens in the Engkischergarten will work too. In June, it will still be light outside until nearly 10 at night.

For something quieter, I think the best traditional restaurant in the center is the Spatenhaus, located right by the opera house and Residenz.

I would personally NEVER recommend the Hofbrauhaus. As a first timer I would really want you to have a good time in a beer hall, and you're not always guaranteed of that at H. Last time I went was because our kids really wanted to go, but that was the last straw for me. Our waiter was surly and flat out said "No" he wasn't waiting on us. After sitting there for a little while with no food/drink/service and watching other tables in his section also receive the same abysmal treatment I tracked down a manager (not a simple task) and had a big confrontation with the waiter and the manager. We finally had two new waiters assigned to us AND free drinks. But it's just not worth it when there are many nice beer halls in the downtown Munich.

Want something fun to do? Then take a Mike's Bike Tour around the city. You'll have some laughs and see some sights and have general fun.

Definitely visit a beer garden during the day of the weather permits. If you want loud and boisterous for dinner then any of the beer halls near the city center will work. If you are looking for a quieter restaurant near downtown my family always enjoyed Der Tannenbaum near Sendlinger Tor. If you are willing to go a little further out of highly recommend Paulaner am Nockherberg for both a beer garten experience and a dinner restaurant. The beer garden if often voted one of the best in Munich and the brewery restaurant has excellent food (get duck if they have it on the specials board). It's also the only place to get Nockherberger beer (unfiltered, unpasteurized lager). This is where I would go for my bday dinner.

Dinner should really be at the Wirtshaus in der Au. Whenever we have to entertain clients in Munich we go there and it's always just worked out fine. It's traditional Bavarian yet not touristy, not too oompah, food is not too greasy... it's just right. Also it's right behind the Deutsches Museum.
