Catching train from Munich Airport - How Much Time to Allow?

Hello Travelers! I'm looking at catching a train right after I fly into Munich airport.

I arrive around 13:10, and the train with the best connections would leave the airport at 14:44 (to catch a further train to Bolzano at Munich Ost).

Is an hour and a half enough time to grab my checked luggage, head through customs (EU passport holder, so think that line will be much shorter) and walk to wherever one catches the S8 train at MUC?

In my fuzzy memory, it seems like enough time, but I've never been in a rush and have always taken the Lufthansa bus into town before.

Thanks in advance!

Are you flying in from a Schengen destination, or from the US and you have a European
passport?

If you fly in on UA or LH (or another Star Alliance airline) you will come into Terminal 2 and
cross the outside atrium area into the Airport Center building to get the S8. If you come into
Terminal 1 you, I think, can exit directly into the Airport Center.

Coming in from Europe, you probably have enough time, although (guesses) 30 minutes to
depart the plane after touchdown, 10 minutes to take the train (if you land in T2 Satellite), 30
minutes after that to get luggage, and 10-15 minutes to walk over to the station is not much of
a cushion.

If you are flying in from the US, and they are making everyone register at the machines for
EES data collection, I don't think (someone else may know more) that an EU passport gets
you to a shorter line for doing that. That is a variable that has been difficult to predict.

EU passport holders don't need to register for EES.

The trains go from under the central area Z, follow signs to Z or DB or S (green logo) if you need a ticket for the S-Bahn the machines are on the concourse level before you go down. Depending on which gate you come out of it could take 10 minutes to walk to the station AFTER all the processes. But as long as the plane is on time you should be OK.

S8 is the correct train, don't be put off by the S1 showing destination Ostbahnhof - that goes anti-clockwise all round the city.

Thanks for the insight! I'm a dual US/EU citizen, US resident, flying from the US into MUC.

I was under the impression that EU citizens did not need to go through the EES system (the EU already has my fingerprints and data!) but, I am not finding info expressly for dual citizens so I'd certainly feel better if someone else has this experience and can report how it went.

Good to know about the terminal set up! The time it takes to get luggage and passport control seem like the largest variables, but also getting to the actual train platform!

What passport will you be using? EU or US?

If you are ready to go, you can take the S8 at 14:24, or 14:04. Plenty services at Munich Ost.

the info is already being updated for ETIAS (deep breath, large drink....)

but EU passport holders do not go through EES procedures. The ETIAS rule say you must use the EU passport, not heard must with EES but it makes sense to.

this is an increasing trend with various countries, eg the UK now requires dual citizens to use their UK passport only when arriving

I agree with Shoeflyer, everything depends on when you ACTUALLY arrive. 13:10 is just a scheduled arrival. Are you coming from the US? Arrival time could be earlier or a lot later. I've been an hour late arriving on a trans-Atlantic flight 3 times out of the last 11 arrivals.

Even with a US passport, I'm usually out of the terminal and at the S-Bahn station within an hour of arriving.

I think you should be alright if your flight arrives on time, but no one can guarantee that.

I hope you don't have a train specific ticket that requires you to catch a specific train at a specific time or lose your ticket. If so, now all you can do it hope. What will be will be.
